8 Ideas for Spring Walk with Kids
It has been a week of rain and thunderstorms and I am looking forward to the weather improving a little so we can spend more time outside. But even this week we managed to find sunny moments and go for some much-loved walks. Spring is my favourite time of the year, and I am excited to share my love for the season with my little ones, and also with you. Here is what we love to do in Spring outdoors.
Dandelions
It’s dandelions season! My daughter has been in love with dandelions since she was one! OK, to be fair, one and a half years old. Still, they have always fascinated her. And as she grows so far her love grows too. Dandelions are so fun. Blowing on them is only one way to enjoy. They can be transformed by our imagination into umbrellas or anything else we like to play with. Running with a bunch of dandelions in hand is great fun. Or turning around and around. It always feels like a little magic when the flakes start to fly.
Shadows
Even if this is not the sunniest Spring in history, the sun is shining so much more often than in winter. We can see it pretty much every day for at least a little bit. And when there is sun there are shadows. Shadows is another fascinating thing my daughter discovered last spring when she was two and a half. We love to observe how shadows change direction, become longer or shorter depending on the time of the day, or disappear if we walk by the shade of the trees. We also like to chase each other’s shadows and stand on them. It may sound silly, but when the sun is out and we are feeling playful it’s good fun.
Chalk drawing
This is something I did a lot in my childhood. I am surprised not to see it so often nowadays, but my daughter loves to draw, and so she loves to draw with chalk a lot. We draw together what we see around us, what we read in the books, or anything that comes to mind. I often draw my daughter on a walk, doing something she loves to do, like riding a scooter, or on a swing in a playground. Drawing with chalk has such a romantic feel to it. I feel like a real artist when I do it. It’s nice also that the scale can be much larger than on paper. Real size if we want it!
Babbles
In theory, babbles are always fun! But in reality, I don’t feel like playing with them when it’s wet and cold in winter. Spring is another story. When the sun is shining and it’s a little warmer it’s the perfect time to make some babbles, big and small, and chase them around. Also very good for releasing little one’s crazy energy.
Sandpit
It has now become warm enough to spend time sitting in the sandpit. And which child doesn’t love it?! As for me, it reminds me of being on the beach. So I go with my memories and enjoy the sensory feeling when touching the sand. After rain? Even better, time to build sandcastles from the wet sand! It could even be a competition: who’s sandcastle is bigger, taller or prettier!
Flowers and Blossom
Both me and my daughter love flowers. We enjoy finding various wildflowers and blossoming trees. My daughter now tries to smell every flower and every tree and to absorb the sensation of Spring through the scent. I am so pleased to share this with her and gladly lift her up to the trees to smell.
Looking for Ducklings
Spring is the perfect time of the year to head to the pond to observe new life. Looking for, finding, and observing ducklings, goslings, cygnets, and other baby birds is so wonderful. We checked out a few ponds around this spring to see who we can find. Also, if you are lucky, you may be able to see tadpoles in the water. We are still looking for them!
Feeding Duckies
While looking for ducklings it’s also a great idea to feed the duckies and other birds you find. Kids absolutely love it. This spring I bought Quack Snack - portion packed pellets for feeding ducks, swans, and other waterfowl. The snacks float in water and are perfect to take with us on a walk. They are also hassle-free as they are already in a bag ready to be used with sustainable packaging.
